Is Common Courtesy Dead?

  • by

Okay, I know everyone is super busy. All those technological advances that were suppose to increase our leisure time have only seemed to fill up what little time we had. And, from my perspective, neck deep in trying to promote my novel, Stealing The Marbles, it’s killed common courtesy, too.

Back when I was job searching, I would spend hours working on cover letters, tweaking my resume, sending them off to any job that I felt even remotely qualified for. In 99.9% of the cases, I didn’t get back so much as an acknowledgment that they had received it.

Now that I’m in the promotion phase for my novel, I’m sending off emails seeking interviews, reviews, information vital to my promotional efforts and, in 99.9% of the cases, I don’t get back so much as an acknowledgment that they received it. Indeed, only one person, thus far, has responded to my query about a review.

What’s that about? I mean, how hard is it to click reply, type ‘thanks but no thanks’ and click on send? Hell, you could set up an auto responder to do that for you. I just don’t understand it. Anytime someone compliments me on my book, or suggests it to others, I always try to respond with a thank you. It’s just common courtesy.

You would think with all this ‘Social Networking’ going on, common courtesy would increase. Sure doesn’t seem to be working that way. If anything, it seems to be going in the opposite direction.

Sometimes I feel like I’ve gotten too old for this world.
